Champs Elysees: A French-Inspired Restaurant Design

Creating a Younger, Trendy, and Durable Classic Commercial Space

In this project, Chiu Hung Cheung, a renowned designer, takes inspiration from the streetscape of Paris, France to transform the Li Xiang Yuan buffet in a five-star hotel in Kaohsiung. The aim is to break the outdated impression of the restaurant and create a new, stylish, and topical dining experience.

The design team, led by Chiu Hung Cheung, collaborates with artist Yuquan to incorporate unique installation art using bamboo and old paper. By dyeing and layering the materials with traditional glutinous rice glue, they create a suspended artwork that becomes the new logo of the restaurant. This creative thinking pays homage to the local cultural characteristics and adds a spiritual value to the commercial space.

The design realization technology includes stone, metal, and iron furnishings, wood grain brick, stone brick floors, expanded net, veneer board, and LED lights. These elements combine to create an elegant and textured space atmosphere.

The restaurant spans approximately 1057.856 square meters and features various seating areas, including a long table for six people, a stylish deck, a square table area, a sofa area, private rooms, a four-seat area, a cashiers counter, an unloading area, a preparation area for hot and cold food, and a bar area.

To cater to different dining preferences, the team has planned different seating categories, ranging from double seats to private rooms that can accommodate six people. This allows guests to be assigned to the most suitable locations based on their space requirements. The food area is centrally located, ensuring equal distances for taking meals in various locations and transforming the self-service dining environment into a more friendly traffic flow.

The Champs Elysees design project was completed in Kaohsiung in May 2020. The design team faced challenges in erecting the hanging art installation due to the large height difference between the floor and the ceiling. Strict safety measures were implemented to overcome this challenge. Additionally, the planning of indoor seating required careful consideration to maximize the number of seats while maintaining a comfortable and luxurious dining space.

The Champs Elysees design not only creates a stylish ambiance consistent with the restaurant's theme but also serves as a landmark during non-dining hours. The effective reuse of idle space generates connections with culture and the business mode, contributing to the sustainability of the establishment.

This exceptional design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. The award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
